ew User Guide to Getting Connected
Windows 2000

What You Need to Get Started

  • Your Planet Connect username and password.
  • Your local Planet Connect dialup number.
  • Your computer - properly connected to a phone line.

Step 1: Open "My Network Places"

On your desktop is an icon labeled My Network Places. Double click with the left mouse button on this icon. A new window will appear. In this window, on the left-hand side, will be a link titled Network and Dialup Connections. Click this link and you should see a new icon titled Make New Connection.

Step 2: Make a New Connection

Double click on the Make New Connection icon and the Network Connection Wizard will start. Click next to continue.

On the next screen to appear, select Dial Up To The Internet and click next. This will start the Internet Connection Wizard

Step 3: The Internet Connection Wizard

On the first screen in the Internet Connection Wizard, select the 3rd option - I want to setup my internet connection manually, and then click next

You will then be asked how you connect to the internet. Select Phone Line and click on next

The next screen asks you to enter the telephone number of the computer you will be dialing. Type in your Planet Connect Telephone Number (make sure to leave the Area Code BLANK!) and click the Advanced button.

Step 4: Dial Up Properties

In the new Properties window, verify that the Connection Type is set to PPP (Point to Point Protocol) and that the Logon Procedure is set to None.

At the top of this window, click on the Addresses tab. Once on the Addresses screen, make sure that IP Address is set to Internet Service Provider Automatically Provides One. The bottom portion of this window contains the DNS Server Addresses. Make sure that Always Use the Following is selected and enter the following numbers:

Primary DNS - 207.65.96.5
Secondary DNS - 207.65.96.3

Click on OK and then click on Next.

You will now be asked to enter your Planet Connect username and password in the specified boxes. Make sure you use only lowercase letters

When asked to title the connection, type in Planet Connect. Click on Next. You will be asked if you wish to setup your internet mail at this time. If you have already setup mail on your computer, select NO and enjoy your new internet connection. However, if you have not yet setup your computer to receive your email, please select YES and continue reading!

Step 5: Internet Mail Configuration

Assuming you've chosen YES and gone into the internet mail configuration.

When it asks you to enter a Display Name, enter your name and click next

You will then be asked to enter your E-Mail Address. Your E-Mail Address is username@planetc.com. Once your email address is correctly typed in, click next (ex: if your name is John Doe, and your username is jdoe, your email address would be jdoe@planetc.com)

The next screen you will see asks you to specify the names of the incoming (POP3) and outgoing (SMTP) mail servers. The very top field should be set to POP3 (My incoming mail server is a POP3 server). For both incoming and outgoing mail server (POP3 and SMTP) fields, enter mail.planetc.com (make sure to use all lowercase letters!) and then click next.

The next screen asks for your account name and password. The account name is your Planet Connect Username. Use the same password that you used previously in step 4 of these instructions.

You will then be given a button that says finish. Click that button and setup is complete! Close any windows you have open and double click on the icon labeled Internet Explorer. This automatically starts your dial-up connection window. Click the Connect button and once you connect have fun surfing! To check your email start a program named Outlook Express.
