What You Need to Get Started

Windows NT 4.0 installed on your system
The Windows NT 4.0 installation CD, if you don't already have Remote Access Services (RAS) installed.
An account with Planet Connect, and  the following information about that account:

• Your Planet Connect username and password.       
• Your Planet Connect local access number (usually given at time of signup).
• The IP address for Planet Connect's Domain Name Server (DNS):

  Primary DNS:   207.65.96.5

  Secondary DNS: 207.65.96.3

Step 1: Installing and Configuring Dial Up Networking for NT 4.0

Before you can begin the installation and configuration process, you must verify that Remote Access Services (RAS) is installed on your system.

First, double click on the MY COMPUTER icon, then double click on CONTROL PANEL, and then double click on the NETWORK icon. Once the new dialog box opens, click on the SERVICES tab. You should see something similar to this:

Assuming you find Remote Access Service on the list, you can continue on with the directions below. If not, click here to see how to install Remote Access Services on your system.

While you are still on the same screen as shown above, make sure Remote Access Service is highlighted. Then, click on ADD. The Add RAS Device screen (shown below) will appear.

Select the modem you want to use from the Ras Capable Devices scroll list (most likely this will show up in the window already) and click the OK button.

**Note: If you haven't previously installed your modem, select the Install Modem button to add it.**

Click the Configure button, and you'll see the Configure Port Usage window with your modem listed (as shown below). 

By default, the Port Usage section will have "Receive Calls Only" selected. Change this to the Dial Out Only option.
Note: "The Dial out and Receive calls" option can be used, but isn't advised unless you have the proper security options chosen. Those options are not covered here.

Click the OK button and the Remote Access Setup window (not shown) will appear.

Click the  Network button to bring up the Network Configuration window (shown below)

Make sure that TCP/IP is the only protocol with a checkmark. Click OK, then Continue, which will bring you to the Network/Services window. Close that window by clicking OK. If Windows NT prompts you to reboot (restart your computer), do so.

Step 2: Create the Dial Up Networking Connection

In order to connect to the Internet using Planet Connect, it is necessary to create a dial up networking connection.

First, double click on MY COMPUTER, and then double click on the DIAL UP NETWORKING folder. The first time you create a dial up, you will be prompted with a message "The Phonebook is empty - click OK to add entry".  A setup wizard will start (as shown below). On the first screen, name the entry Planet Connect or something similar. The screen shots below indicate the selections that should be made in each dialog box.

If you already have a previously created dialup, you will see a screen similar to the one found below. Click on NEW to add a dialup connection for Planet Connect. Clicking on the MORE button will allow you to go to other areas to edit information, etc.

Once the dialup for planet Connect has been created, go into your DIAL UP NETWORKING folder, and highlight the Planet Connect dialup from the list. Then choose the SERVER tab and click on TCP/IP SETTINGS. The screen PPP TCP/IP Settings (shown below) will appear.

In most cases you should use SERVER ASSIGNED for both the IP Address and Name Server. If you are experiencing difficulty bringing up Web pages once you are connected, then changing the Name Server area to SPECIFY and entering the DNS numbers noted at the top of this page may resolve the problem.

Step 3: Logging On to the Internet through Dial Up Neworking

Once everything is set up,  double click on the DIAL UP NETWORKING folder and make sure the Planet Connect dialup option is chosen. The screen below should appear. Enter your Planet Connect username and password in lower case and choose OK to start the dialer. Be sure the Domain area is left blank.

Once the dialer indicates Connected, you can double click on your browser to start viewing pages on the World Wide Web or choose your email program for sending and receiving email.

Note: Do NOT enter anything for the "domain" field, or the connection will not work properly
